OCS Prep Collaborative FAQs
Who is this program for?
The OCS Prep Program is designed for licensed physical therapists who plan to sit for the Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) examination and want a structured, supported approach to exam preparation while continuing full-time clinical practice. It is intended for clinicians who are specifically focused on board certification preparation.
How does this program differ from an orthopedic residency?
The OCS Prep Program is a board exam preparation program, not a residency and not a substitute for residency training. It does not include comprehensive mentorship hours, academic coursework, or residency-level competency requirements. The program is narrowly focused on OCS-aligned knowledge, clinical decision making, and exam readiness rather than full specialist training.
Is this program a pathway or gateway into the orthopedic residency?
No. Participation in the OCS Prep Program does not serve as a prerequisite, pipeline, or preferential pathway into the orthopedic residency. Residency admission is a separate process with independent eligibility requirements and selection criteria.
How do I choose which option is right for me?
If your primary goal is preparing for the OCS examination with structure and accountability, the OCS Prep Program may be the right fit. If you are seeking comprehensive advanced clinical training, long-term mentorship, and development of specialist-level competencies beyond exam preparation, an orthopedic residency may be more appropriate.
What is the cost of the program?
The OCS Prep Program is offered at no direct cost to the participant. In exchange, participants agree to a one-year employment commitment post program completion.
Will I still have access to continuing education benefits?
If attending the recommended con ed weekends associated with the OCS Prep Program, no additional con ed dollars can be used for that year.
What is the time commitment?
The program is designed to be manageable alongside full-time clinical practice. Time commitments include structured reading, joint-specific test preparation activities, optional resident-led study groups, and three required weekend intensives. The overall time commitment is significantly less than that of a residency and predicted to be ~1-3hrs/week on average.
Are the weekend intensives required?
No. They are not required, but they are strongly recommended because they help translate didactic content into direct patient application by refining joint‑specific manual skills and clinical decision‑making.
What topics are covered?
Content is organized around joint- and region-specific OCS domains, with emphasis on examination, differential diagnosis, intervention selection, progression, and alignment with current clinical practice guidelines and Current Concepts.
Does participation guarantee passing the OCS exam?
No program can guarantee exam success. The OCS Prep Program is designed to align preparation with OCS exam content and evidence-based clinical reasoning principles that are commonly tested.
